I guess Colin Powell's statements are no longer operative


That big sucking sound is the last bit of credibility Colin Powell had going down the tubes. I've not had much faith in him since the whole U.N. "Chemical Weapons in Iraq Revue". But this was lying for nothing. Absolutely nothing at all.

ATLANTA, Ga. - Jean-Bertrand Aristide said in a telephone interview Monday that he was 'forced to leave' Haiti by U.S. military forces.

Aristide was put in contact with The Associated Press by the Rev. Jesse Jackson (news - web sites) following a news conference, where the civil rights leader called on Congress to investigate Aristide's ouster.

When asked if he left Haiti on his own, Aristide quickly answered: 'No. I was forced to leave.

'They were telling me that if I don't leave they would start shooting, and be killing in a matter of time,' Aristide said during the brief interview via speaker phone. He spoke with a thick Haitian accent, his voice obscured at times by a bad connection. It was unclear whether Aristide meant that rebels or U.S. agents would begin shooting.

When asked who the agents were, he responded: "White American, white military.

"They came at night. ... There were too many. I couldn't count them," he added.

Aristide told reporters that he signed documents relinquishing power out of fear that violence would erupt in Haiti if he didn't comply with the demands of "American security agents." [emphasis added]

Reading List It is a good thing to be married to a librarian. Our local system has a web-accessable catalog where I can put a book on hold. Depending on how many people are waiting for the book, in a few days to a few months, my wife comes home with the book I've requested. I was reading "A Mathematician Plays the Stock Market" by John Allen Paulos. It is the kind of book that makes mathematics of investing accessable to non-mathematical types (and some of us mathematical folks as well), even as he tells the story of his failed love affair with Worldcom stock. Of course, I set this aside as soon as I got in "Big Lies: The Right-Wing Propaganda Machine and How It Distorts the Truth" by Joe Conason.
